Classical, scented and low maintenance garden design using bespoke trellis and relaxed planting.
This small rear garden had the advantage of a handsome Lombardy Poplar tree, providing plenty of privacy from neighbouring properties. It was also backed by a tall rear wall which was somewhat out of proportion with the rest of the garden.
The client wanted to create a beautiful green and abundant garden without being too clipped and formal. The space is used for entertaining and enjoying all year round so plants needed to have a long season of flower and continue to provide interest all year round.
We used bespoke trellis to create shape and style throughout the space and to break up the height of the rear wall. We terraced the area in front of the tall wall which allowed for two tiers of built in planters and plants, giving better proportions to the space.
The planting scheme included both evergreen Magnolia Grandiflora standards and deciduous Magnolia multi-stems both flowering a different times. We also opted for white climbing roses for scent, interspersed with columns of highly fragrant Trachelospermum.
White Digitalis (foxglove), variegated Pittosporums, Hydrangea paniculata, Camilias and scented Viburnum interwoven with spring flowering bulbs added interest and delicate beauty.
The garden design was completed with stunning electric lanterns and up lighters from John Cullen.
The client was delighted.
